All things new – Sticks and Stones

All things new – Sticks and Stones

The big idea

There is one thing in my experience that will prevent us from trusting God, that is hurtful words that have been sown in to our lives, negative things people say about us that shape how we see ourselves, lies that make us feel unworthy and unwanted.

People say things intentionally or otherwise that stick with us and shape how we see ourselves. These hurtful words can stop us seeing ourselves the way God sees us.

God longs to bring his transformational power into your life to bring healing from these wounds from the past so you can see yourself the way he sees you: dearly loved and valued.

Key Scriptures

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21

Romans (14: 13, 16-19)

13 So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.

16 Then you will not be criticized for doing something you believe is good.17 For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you, too. 19 So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up

Next Steps

  1. Take every opportunity to speak words of life.

If the tongue has the power of life and death then take every opportunity to speak words of life into your own life and into your relationships with friends, family and neighbors.

  1. Don’t let others bring people down.

We all have a responsibility to each other and to God to not let hurtful words be spoken into peoples lives. As General David Morrison said, “the standard you walk past is the standard you accept”. We should have a godly intolerance to people putting others down. That doesn’t mean we put them down but speak to them about the impact of their words.
