Journey to Easter – How full is your tank

Journey to Easter – How full is your tank

The big idea

In your car there is a little warning light that is important and can not be ignored. When we ignore the fuel light we are very likely to get stuck and stranded.

Somewhat like our cars, we all have a spiritual, physical, emotional fuel tank inside of us. Unfortunately there isn’t a big warning light to let us know when it is getting low. But if we are not careful to be monitor them and top them up, life gets tough and we feel like we get stuck.

In life we need fuel for the journey and the more we travel, the more we step out, the more we need to be filled and refueled. So how full is your tank? Are you just topping it up enough to get by or are you allowing Jesus to fill you to overflowing?

Key Scriptures

John 4:1-15

Jesus[a] knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than John (though Jesus himself didn’t baptize them—his disciples did). So he left Judea and returned to Galilee.

He had to go through Samaria on the way. Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.

The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans.[b] She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”

10 Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”

11 “But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? 12 And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”

13 Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. 14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”

15 “Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.”

Next Steps

  1. Where are you drinking from?

It is not difficult to drink from other sources that only satisfy you temporarily.

If you’re looking to a relationship to fill you up you will be thirsty again. Alcohol, Netflix binge, a new car, adventure. It works for a little while but it doesn’t sustain.

When you drink from the waters Jesus offers you, you know the rules for life and how to live life to the full.

  1. Intentionally make time to be filled.

Getting drained isn’t the problem, when you put fuel in the car and you drive it around you expect it to diminish. You need to stay connected to the source and there are things you can do to help that.

Get connected to the source. Get into your bibles, build relationships with others in a Lifegroup, serve Jesus in the way he has called you to serve.

Keep an eye on the other tanks because they affect one another. Your Spiritual, emotional, physical tanks. What tops up your love tank? Intentionally make time to fill them.

You don’t accidentally get filled, you need to do it intentionally.

  1. Be pouring into the lives of others

Jesus promised not only would we be filled, but we would overflow. We would overflow with his love, with his grace, with his forgiveness. That overflow is not supposed to be poured onto the ground and wasted. That overflow has a purpose!

We are called to live godly lives, reflecting Jesus in all we do. We can’t do it in our own strength, we do it in his, we know his grace, we know his forgiveness because it is constantly poured into our lives. Now we let it pour out of us into the lives of others. Overflow the grace of God in to other peoples lives.
